Peter’s Donkey

My friend Peter went to live in a village. One day his new neighbor said to him, ‘You must buy a donkey. Every family here has a donkey to carry things for them’.

So Peter bought a donkey for five pounds. But it was a very slow animal. It did not like to work. When he beat it with a stick, it stopped. One day he met his neighbour again.

Peter said, ‘I can’t understand this donkey. It will not work for me. When I put something on its back, it will not walk. I beat it and beat it, but it’s no good’.

The man said, ‘Don’t beat it. You must speak to it. A donkey likes to hear kind words. Get on its back, and I will show you.’

Peter got on to the donkey’s back. The man spoke into the donkey’s ear. ‘Tirri, tirri’, he said. And the animal ran all the way home.

WILD BIRDS

Wild birds are afraid of us. They fly away when we go near them. But it is easy to be friendly with any birds. You must be patient and have plenty of time. You must not try to catch a bird or hurt it. Peter always feeds the birds which come to his garden. They are quite wild, but they are also hungry.

At first they were afraid of him. He used to put some food on the top of a wall for them. They waited until he went back into the house. And then they flew down to eat the food. After a few months they used to sit on the wall, waiting for him. They came nearer and nearer to his hand, because there was food in his hand.

Now, some of the birds eat the pieces of bread out of his hand. At the end of the meal, they whistle to say ‘Thank you’.
